As you can see in the screenshot up above, it shows that I was on Sprint's Network today. The way this works is that if Google sees that one carrier signal is stronger than the other carrier signal in point in time, you will be switch to the better network within that area. So you won't lose connections at all. This would be the same way with the Wifi connection. When you are going from Wifi to LTE data, Google will allow you to keep connection while switching.
